“Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” is a 1981 hit single by Stevie Nicks featuring Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, serving as the lead track from Nicks’ debut solo album Bella Donna. The song was written by Tom Petty and Mike Campbell, who originally recorded it for their own album Hard Promises, but producer Jimmy Iovine—who was simultaneously producing both projects—persuaded Petty to give the track to Nicks.
The collaboration began when Stevie Nicks, a longtime fan of Tom Petty, persistently asked him to write a song for her solo debut. Petty initially wrote a ballad called “Insider” for her, but after they recorded it together, he preferred the result and kept it for his own album. Feeling guilty, Petty offered Nicks “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” instead; although he had already recorded the track with his full band and lead vocals, they agreed to a duet where Stevie Nicks sang over the existing instrumental, with Petty’s vocals largely wiped out in the verses to accommodate her.
Released in July 1981, the song became a massive success, peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the first music videos played on MTV. The track is notable for being the only song on Bella Donna not written or co-written by Stevie Nicks, and it established a long-standing professional friendship and musical partnership between the two artists.
[Verse 1: Stevie Nicks]
Baby, you come knockin’ on my front door
Same old line you used to use before
I said yeah, well, what am I supposed to do?
I didn’t know what I was gettin’ into
[Chorus: Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty]
So you’ve had a little trouble in town
Now you’re keepin’ some demons down
Stop draggin’ my, stop draggin’ my
Stop draggin’ my heart around
[Verse 2: Stevie Nicks]
It’s hard to think about what you’ve wanted
It’s hard to think about what you’ve lost
This doesn’t have to be the big get-even
This doesn’t have to be anything at all
[Pre-Chorus: Tom Petty]
I know you really wanna tell me goodbye
I know you really wanna be your own girl
[Chorus: Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty]
Baby, you could never look me in the eye
Yeah, you buckle with the weight of the word
Stop draggin’ my, stop draggin’ my
Stop draggin’ my heart around
[Instrumental Interlude]
[Verse 3: Stevie Nicks]
People runnin’ ’round loose in the world
Ain’t got nothin’ better to do
Make a meal of some bright-eyed kid
You need someone lookin’ after you
[Pre-Chorus: Tom Petty]
I know you really wanna tell me goodbye
I know you really wanna be your own girl
[Chorus: Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty]
Baby, you could never look me in the eye
Yeah, you buckle with the weight of the word
Stop draggin’ my, stop draggin’ my
Stop draggin’ my heart around
[Outro: Stevie Nicks]
Stop draggin’ my heart around
Stop draggin’ my heart around
Stop draggin’ my heart around
Stop draggin’ my heart around
