“Barracuda” by Heart was released in 1977 as the lead single from their album Little Queen and peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song was written by Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Roger Fisher, and Michael DeRosier as a direct response to the sexist and exploitative tactics of their former label, Mushroom Records.

The lyrics were inspired by a specific incident in 1976 where a male record promoter asked Ann Wilson about her “lover” after a concert in Detroit.  Ann initially thought he meant her boyfriend, but he revealed he was referring to her sister Nancy, acting on a fabricated rumor that the sisters were in a romantic relationship.  This rumor had been deliberately spread by Mushroom Records in a sleazy advertisement using their Dreamboat Annie cover art to generate publicity.

Thematic Meaning: The “barracuda” is a metaphor for predatory figures in the music industry, such as sleazy promoters and record executives who treated the band as sexual products rather than artists.

  • Musical Composition: The iconic opening riff was inspired by the song “This Flight Tonight” (originally by Joni Mitchell, covered by Nazareth), which the band had opened for during tours in Europe.
  • Label Dispute: The song’s creation coincided with the band’s legal battle with Mushroom Records, leading them to leave for Portrait Records (under CBS) and record Little Queen in a rushed three-week period.
  • Production: Producer Mike Flicker helped capture the band’s rage, using techniques like phase shifters and backward tape tracks to create the song’s aggressive, driving sound.

[Instrumental Intro]

[Verse 1]
So, this ain’t the end, I saw you again today
I had to turn my heart away
Smile like the sun, kisses for everyone
And tales, it never fails

[Chorus]
You lying so low in the weeds
I bet you wanna ambush me
You’d have me down, down, down, down on my knees
Now wouldn’t you, Barracuda?
Oh

[Instrumental Bridge]

[Verse 2]
Back over time, we were all trying for free
You met the porpoise and me, uh-huh
No right, no wrong, selling a song, a name
Whisper game

[Chorus]
And if the real thing don’t do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn it to the wick
Ooh, Barracuda
Oh, yeah

[Bridge]
“Sell me, sell you,” the porpoise said
Dive down deep now to save my head
You… I think that you got the blues, too
All that night and all the next
Swam without looking back
We made for the Western pools
Silly, silly fools!

[Guitar Solo]

[Chorus]
The real thing don’t do the trick
No? You better make up something quick
You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn it to the wick
Oh, Barra-Barracuda
Yeah

[Outro]
Ooh, hey
