Solsbury Hill is the debut solo single by British musician Peter Gabriel, released in 1977 from his self-titled album.  The song emerged shortly after Gabriel left the progressive rock band Genesis in 1975, marking his transition to a solo career.  Gabriel wrote the track following a spiritual epiphany he experienced while climbing Little Solsbury Hill, an Iron Age hill fort near Bath, Somerset, England.

The lyrics metaphorically describe the fear and exhilaration of leaving a successful, established career to pursue artistic independence. Gabriel has explained the song’s core theme as “being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get,” specifically referencing his decision to walk away from Genesis despite the band’s impending global superstardom.  The track features a distinctive 7/4 time signature and intricate acoustic guitar work, serving as a personal manifesto of liberation and self-reinvention.

Upon its release, Solsbury Hill became a Top 20 hit in the UK (peaking at No. 13) and reached No. 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. It established Gabriel as a viable solo artist and has since become a cultural shorthand for personal transformation, appearing in major films like Vanilla Sky and In Good Company.  Gabriel later returned to the physical location to record ambient sounds for his 2011 album New Blood, which featured an orchestral rendition of the song.

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
I had to listen, had no choice

[Chorus]
I did not believe the information
Just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom, boom, boom
“Son,” he said, “Grab your things, I’ve come to take you home”
Hey, back home

[Verse 2]
To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Though my life was in a rut
‘Til I thought of what I’d say
Which connection I should cut

[Chorus]
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom, boom, boom
“Hey,” he said, “Grab your things, I’ve come to take you home”
Hey, back home

[Verse 3]
When illusion spin her net
I’m never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me

[Chorus]
Today I don’t need a replacement
I’ll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom, boom, boom
“Hey,” I said, “You can keep my things, they’ve come to take me home”
