“I Ran (So Far Away)” is a 1982 new wave hit by A Flock of Seagulls that became a defining anthem of the early MTV era. Released as the lead single from their self-titled debut album, it reached #9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in Australia, though it only peaked at #43 in the UK.

Origins and Inspiration
The song’s creation was sparked by two key moments for frontman Mike Score: hearing a local band in Liverpool perform a track titled “I Ran,” and subsequently seeing a 1950s-style poster of a couple fleeing a flying saucer at a record label office. This combination inspired the song’s sci-fi theme of alien abduction and the lyrics describing a man’s anxiety when confronting his feelings for a woman under the Aurora Borealis. The track was technically innovative for its time, blending Roland Jupiter-8 synthesizers with live drums and guitar, creating a hybrid sound that bridged synth-pop and rock.

Cultural Impact and Legacy
The music video, filmed in a room covered in aluminum foil and mirrors, received heavy rotation on MTV and catapulted the band to fame, largely due to Score’s distinctive, wind-swept hairstyle. Despite the song’s massive success, the band struggled to maintain momentum, with Score later expressing frustration that his hair and this single hit overshadowed his broader musical career. The song has endured as a pop culture staple, appearing in films like La La Land and Edge of Seventeen, the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and serving as a nostalgic reference in various TV shows and commercials.

[Verse 1]
I walk along the avenue
I never thought I’d meet a girl like you
Meet a girl like you
With auburn hair and tawny eyes
The kind of eyes that hypnotise me through
Hypnotise me through

[Chorus]
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
I couldn’t get away

[Verse 2]
A cloud appears above your head
A beam of light comes shining down on you
Shining down on you
The cloud is moving nearer still
Aurora borealis comes in view
Aurora comes in view

[Chorus]
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
I couldn’t get away

[Guitar Solo]

[Verse 3]
Reached out a hand to touch your face
You’re slowly disappearing from my view
Appearing from my view
Reached out a hand to try again
I’m floating in a beam of light with you
A beam of light with you

[Outro]
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I couldn’t get away
