Written by Chris Foreman and Cathal “Chas Smash” Smyth, “Our House” was released on 12 November 1982 as the lead single from Madness’ fourth studio album, The Rise & Fall.  The song originated from a band-wide exercise to write about family life; while other members did not contribute, Smyth drew directly from his childhood in a crowded North London household, while Foreman provided the musical framework using a boom-box drum machine.

The track underwent significant transformation during production, shifting from an initial slow, dirge-like tempo to a lively Motown-inspired rhythm with the help of producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley.  Recorded at AIR Studios in London, the song features string arrangements by David Bedford and is characterized by its nostalgic, humorous depiction of working-class domestic chaos, including vignettes of a father in his “Sunday best” and a mother ironing shirts.

Commercially, “Our House” became Madness’ biggest hit in the United States, peaking at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending 19 weeks on the chart.  In the UK, it reached number 5 and won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Pop Song in May 1983.  The accompanying music video, filmed at a terraced house on Stephenson Street near Willesden Junction, depicted the band members acting out the song’s lyrics as a dysfunctional family, contributing to its widespread popularity.

Father wears his Sunday best
Mother’s tired, she needs a rest, the kids are playing up downstairs
Sister’s sighing in her sleep (Oh-oh-oh-oh)
Brother’s got a date to keep, he can’t hang around

[Chorus]
Our house in the middle of our street
Our house in the middle of our—

[Verse 2]
Our house, it has a crowd
There’s always something happening and it’s usually quite loud
Our mum, she’s so house-proud
Nothing ever slows her down and a mess is not allowed

[Chorus]
Our house in the middle of our street
Our house in the middle of our—
Our house in the middle of our street
Our house in the middle of our—
(Something tells you that you’ve got to move away from it)

[Verse 3]
Father gets up late for work
Mother has to iron his shirt, then she sends the kids to school
Sees them off with a small kiss (Oh-oh-oh-oh)
She’s the one they’re going to miss in lots of ways

[Instrumental Break]

[Chorus]
Our house in the middle of our street
Our house in the middle of our—

[Bridge]
I remember way back then, when everything was true and when
We would have such a very good time
Such a fine time, such a happy time
And I remember how we’d play, simply waste the day away
Then we’d say nothing would come between us
Two dreamers

[Verse 1]
Father wears his Sunday best
Mother’s tired, she needs a rest, the kids are playing up downstairs
Sister’s sighing in her sleep
Brother’s got a date to keep, he can’t hang around

[Chorus]
Our house in the middle of our street
Our house in the middle of our street
Our house in the middle of our street
Our house in the middle of our—
[Outro]
Our house was our castle and our keep
Our house in the middle of our street
Our house, that was where we used to sleep
Our house in the middle of our street
Our house in the middle of our street
Our house in the middle of our—
