“(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)” is a 1986 hit by the Beastie Boys from their debut album Licensed to Ill*, which became the first rap album to top the Billboard 200. Written primarily by Adam Yauch (MCA) and friend Tom Cushman, with co-writes from bandmates and producer Rick Rubin, the track was composed in approximately five minutes on restaurant napkins during late 1985 sessions.
The song was intended as a satirical parody of mid-1980s hair metal and frat-boy anthems like Motley Crue’s “Smokin’ in the Boys Room,” exaggerating themes of underage drinking, vandalism, and anti-authoritarianism. However, the irony was largely lost on listeners, and the track inadvertently became an anthem for the very party culture the band sought to mock, leading to a controversial “frat boy” image that the group later struggled to distance themselves from.
The accompanying music video, directed by Ric Menello and Adam Dubin with a budget of $20,000, drew inspiration from the pie fight in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the zombie chaos of Dawn of the Dead. Featuring the band as uninterested observers amidst brawling teens, the video prioritized slapstick absurdity over narrative, cementing the song’s status as a defining, albeit ironic, marker of 1980s youth rebellion.
[Intro: Ad-Rock]
Yeah
Kick it
[Verse 1: Ad-Rock, Mike D, Mike D & Ad-Rock, MCA & MCA & Ad-Rock]
You wake up late for school, man, you don’t wanna go
You ask your mom, “Please?”, but she still says, “No”
You missed two classes and no homework
But your teacher preaches class like you’re some kind of jerk
[Chorus: All]
You gotta fight, for your right
To party
[Verse 2: Mike D, Mike D & MCA, MCA & Ad-Rock]
Your pop’s caught you smokin’, man, he says, “No way!”
That hypocrite smokes two packs a day
Man, livin’ at home is such a drag
Now your mom threw away your best porno mag (Bust it)
[Chorus: All]
You gotta fight, for your right
To party
You gotta fight
[Guitar Solo]
[Verse 3: Ad-Rock, Mike D, MCA & All]
Don’t step out of this house if that’s the clothes you’re gonna wear
I’ll kick you out of my home if you don’t cut that hair
Your mom busted in and said, “What’s that noise?”
Aw, Mom, you’re just jealous, it’s the Beastie Boys
[Chorus: All]
You gotta fight, for your right
To party
You gotta fight, for your right
To party
[Outro: All]
Party
Party
