“Keep Your Hands to Yourself” is the debut single by the American Southern rock band Georgia Satellites, written by lead singer Dan Baird and released in November 1986. The song emerged from a 1980 bus ride home from Baird’s construction job, where he composed the lyrics and melody, including the opening line about change in his pocket, without writing tools. Although the band initially broke up in 1984, a cheap 8-track demo of the track was picked up by a British label, leading to the group’s reunion and a contract with Elektra Records.
During the album recording sessions, the band failed to replicate the raw energy of the original demo, so they released the original demo recording as the final single. Lyrically, the song tells the story of a man trying to woo a woman who refuses to become intimate until he proposes marriage, a narrative inspired by the relationship problems of the band’s drummer. The track is structured as a twelve-bar blues in A major, featuring Baird’s distinctive high-lonesome vocal style. Its success helped bring crunchy guitar-based rock back to mainstream radio and unexpectedly influenced later country music artists, bridging the gap between rock and country audiences.
