Mel Gibson’s landmark 2004 biblical epic, “The Passion of the Christ,” is returning to theaters nationwide for a limited one-week engagement from September 10–17. Newly remastered in 4K, the re-release will also feature an exclusive behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the upcoming sequel, “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One,” which is scheduled to premiere on May 6, 2027.
Upon its original release, “The Passion of the Christ” starred Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth and chronicled the final 12 hours of his life. The film became a massive cultural phenomenon, earning three Academy Award nominations and holding the record as the highest-grossing domestic R-rated film for two decades. Operating on a modest budget of roughly $30 million, the original movie ultimately grossed more than $200 million at the box office.
Expanding the Narrative in a Two-Part Follow-Up
The upcoming two-part sequel—starring Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus—will take a much broader approach, exploring the events immediately following the crucifixion as well as the experiences of the apostles. Gibson explained that the films will examine elements not fully detailed in the synoptic Gospels, using historical and theological gaps to explore imaginative possibilities while remaining grounded in orthodox Christian teaching.
“One can look at these things and go, ‘I wonder what was around that?’ and try and analyze those things and make suppositions about what might have been,” Gibson told The Christian Post. “Not to go against anything in orthodox teaching, but to enhance, I think, what’s there for everyone to see.”
A Journey Beyond Earthly Realms
Unlike the earthbound scope of the original film, the sequel will transport viewers across multiple dimensions and settings. Gibson noted that the production will journey through the firmament before creation, the realm of the just, and the depths of the damned, offering a visually expansive experience.
Backed by a significantly larger independent budget estimated at $200 million total ($100 million per film), the production has been able to utilize advanced cinematic tools to achieve a grander scale. Ultimately, Gibson hopes the overarching story will prove inspiring and uplifting for audiences as they witness both the triumphs and the trials faced by Jesus’ followers.
