Mel Gibson is currently in post-production for The Resurrection of the Christ, a two-part follow-up to his 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ.
Unlike the original, which used Aramaic and Latin, these films will be in English to help audiences better digest complex theological themes. The narrative will be non-linear, with Gibson describing the structure as a “jigsaw puzzle” that juxtaposes the central event with other historical moments.
Both parts were filmed simultaneously over 134 days at various locations in Italy. Gibson described the films as distinct pieces that stand on their own merits but complement one another, comparing the approach to The Godfather trilogy.
Gibson has previously noted the films will explore heavy subjects such as Hell, Sheol, the fall of angels, and the origin of Satan.
Lionsgate has scheduled Resurrection: Part One for May 6, 2027, followed by Part Two on May 25, 2028.
Gibson, who spent nearly a decade working on the script with screenwriter Randall Wallace, described the project as a “mission” to tell what he considers the most important story in human history.
