“Rock of Ages” is a hard rock anthem by Def Leppard, serving as the seventh track on their third studio album, Pyromania, released on January 20, 1983. Written by Joe Elliott, Steve Clark, and producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange, the song exemplifies the band’s shift toward a polished, radio-friendly sound characterized by layered guitars and anthemic choruses. It was issued as the second single from the album, following “Photograph,” and reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Top Tracks Rock chart.

The song’s title and chorus originated from a serendipitous event during the Pyromania recording sessions. After the band had composed the music but struggled with lyrics, vocalist Joe Elliott discovered a hymnal left behind by a local church choir that had used the studio the previous night. The book was open to the traditional Christian hymn “Rock of Ages,” and Elliott’s impromptu singing of the phrase provided the perfect hook for the chorus, creating an ironic juxtaposition between the solemn hymn and the track’s hedonistic rock themes.

Produced by Lange at Park Gates Studios and Battery Studios, the track is noted for its meticulous production, including the absence of guitars in the verses to build tension before the explosive chorus. The song’s most recognizable feature is its opening count-in, “Gunter glieben glauchen globen,” a nonsensical phrase improvised by Lange to inject humor and rhythm, replacing the standard “one-two-three-four” count. Additionally, Lange embedded backmasked audio during the guitar solo, including phrases like “Fuck the Russians” and “Brezhnev’s got herpes,” reflecting Cold War-era studio experimentation.

“Rock of Ages” solidified Def Leppard’s mainstream breakthrough, contributing to Pyromania becoming a 10× Platinum bestseller in the US. The iconic intro has endured in popular culture, notably being sampled by The Offspring in their 1998 hit “Pretty Fly (for a White Guy).” The song’s title also inspired the jukebox musical Rock of Ages, which premiered off-Broadway in 2006. Despite the band’s evolving lineup, including the replacement of guitarist Pete Willis with Phil Collen during the sessions, the track remains a cornerstone of 1980s hard rock.

[Spoken Intro: Robert “Mutt” Lange]
Gunter glieben glauchen globen

[Intro: Joe Elliott]
All right
I got something to say, yeah
It’s better to burn out, yeah, than fade away
All right! Ow!
Gonna start a fire
C’mon

[Verse 1: Joe Elliott]
Rise up, gather ’round
Rock this place to the ground
Burn it up, let’s go for broke
Watch the night go up in smoke

[Verse 2: Joe Elliott]
Rock on (Rock on)
Drive me crazier
No serenade, no fire brigade
Just the pyromania, come on

[Pre-Chorus: Joe Elliott]
(What do ya want?) What do ya want?
(I want rock ‘n’ roll) Yes, I do
(Long live rock ‘n’ roll)
See Def Leppard Live

[Verse 3: Joe Elliott]
Oh, let’s go, let’s strike a light
We’re gonna blow like dynamite
I don’t care if it takes all night
Gonna set this town alight, c’mon

[Pre-Chorus: Joe Elliott]
(What do ya want?) What do ya want?
(I want rock ‘n’ roll) All right
(Long live rock ‘n’ roll) Oh, yeah, yeah!

[Chorus: Joe Elliott]
Rock of ages, rock of ages
Still rollin’, keep a-rollin’
Rock of ages, rock of ages
Still rollin’, rock ‘n’ rollin’

[Bridge: Joe Elliott]
We got the power, got the glory
Just say you need it
And if you need it, say yeah (Yeah!)
Ooh, yeah, heh-heh-heh-heh
Now listen to me

[Verse 4: Joe Elliott]
I’m burnin’, burnin’, I got the fever
I know for sure, there ain’t no cure
So feel it, don’t fight it, go with the flow
And gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme one more for the road, yeah
[Pre-Chorus: Joe Elliott]
(What do ya want?) What do ya want?
(I want rock ‘n’ roll) You betcha
(Long live rock ‘n’ roll) Now hit it

[Guitar Solo]

[Chorus: Joe Elliott]
Rock of ages, rock of ages
Still rollin’, keep a-rollin’
Rock of ages, rock of ages
Still rollin’, rock ‘n’ rollin’

[Bridge: Joe Elliott]
We got the power, got the glory
Just say you need it
And if you need it, say yeah (Yeah!)
Say yeah

[Outro: Joe Elliott]
We’re gonna burn this damn place down, woo-hoo
Down to the ground

Hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-hee-heh-heh
