“Don’t Stand So Close to Me” is a hit song by The Police, released in September 1980 as the lead single from their third studio album, Zenyatta Mondatta. Written by lead vocalist Sting, the track explores the theme of an illicit attraction between a schoolteacher and an underage student, drawing direct inspiration from Vladimir Nabokov’s 1955 novel Lolita.

Sting, a former English teacher, stated that the song was not autobiographical but crafted from a fictional perspective to highlight the tension and temptation in a classroom setting. He incorporated a direct allusion in the lyrics—”Just like the old man in that book by Nabokov”—to evoke themes of lust and guilt. While Sting cited his experience with teenage students as context, he clarified that the narrative was a cautionary tale designed for their young female fanbase, who were heavily buying their records.

The song was recorded at Wisseloord Studios in the Netherlands in 1980, evolving from a soul-influenced demo into a stripped-down reggae-rock arrangement featuring Sting’s distinctive bassline, Andy Summers’ arpeggiated guitar, and Stewart Copeland’s minimalistic drums. It achieved massive commercial success, becoming the best-selling single of 1980 in the UK (selling over 800,000 copies) and reaching number 1 on the UK Singles Chart. In the US, it peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the 1981 Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Group.

The band re-recorded the track in 1986 for their greatest hits album, Every Breath You Take – The Singles. Due to Stewart Copeland’s broken collarbone, the version used programmed drums, marking one of the group’s final collaborative efforts before their dissolution. In recent years, Sting has retired the song from live performances due to discomfort with its themes of power dynamics and consent in the post-#MeToo era.

Young teacher, the subject of schoolgirl fantasy
She wants him so badly, knows what she wants to be
Inside her, there’s longing, this girl’s an open page
Bookmarking, she’s so close now; this girl is half his age

[Chorus]
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me

[Verse 2]
Her friends are so jealous; you know how bad girls get
Sometimes, it’s not so easy to be the teacher’s pet
Temptation, frustration, so bad, it makes him cry
Wet bus stop, she’s waiting, his car is warm and dry

[Chorus]
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me

[Verse 3]
Loose talk in the classroom to hurt, they try and try
Strong words in the staffroom, the accusations fly
It’s no use, he sees her, he starts to shake and cough
Just like the old man in that book by Nabokov

[Chorus]
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me

[Bridge]
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, oh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, oh

[Outro]
(Please don’t stand so close to me)
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me
(Please don’t stand so close to me)
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me
(Please don’t stand so close to me)
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me
(Please don’t stand so close to me)
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me
(Please don’t stand so close to me)
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me
(Please don’t stand so close to me)
Don’t stand, don’t stand so
Don’t stand so close to me
