I really miss Benjamin Orr.

“Drive” is The Cars’ third single from the band’s Heartbeat City album. It was written by Ric Ocasek and sung by bassist Benjamin Orr. It is the band’s greatest international hit.

Released as single on July 23, 1984. “Drive” peaked at #3 in the US that September, held from the top spot by Prince “Let’s Go Crazy” and Stevie Wonder “I Just Called To Say I Love You” that fall.

Ambiguous lyrically, the song could be either metaphorical about an emotionally troubled person, or literally about an alcoholic.

[Verse 1]
Who’s gonna tell you when it’s too late?
Who’s gonna tell you things aren’t so great?

[Chorus]
You can’t go on, thinking nothing’s wrong, but now
Who’s gonna drive you home tonight?

[Verse 2]
Who’s gonna pick you up when you fall?
Who’s gonna hang it up when you call?
Who’s gonna pay attention to your dreams?
Yeah, who’s gonna plug their ears when you scream?

[Chorus]
You can’t go on, thinking nothing’s wrong, but now
Who’s gonna drive you home tonight?

[Verse 3]
Who’s gonna hold you down when you shake?
Who’s gonna come around when you break?

[Chorus]
You can’t go on, thinking nothing’s wrong, but now
Who’s gonna drive you home tonight? Hoh-oh-oh
You know you can’t go on thinking nothing’s wrong
Who’s gonna drive you home tonight?

This was the third single from the album and became the band’s biggest hit.

When “Drive” was re-issued in 1985, the royalties from its re-issue were donated to the Band Aid Trust. The song was performed by bass player Ben Orr at the Philadelphia event of Live Aid in 1985, and it was used during the London event in a clip about the famine in Africa.

The music video for “Drive” features model and actress Paulina Porizkova. She later became Ric Ocasek’s wife.

Bass player Ben Orr, who sang on this song, died of pancreatic cancer in 2000. The song was played in his honor at a memorial service at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on the 10th of November 2000.
