Dwight Yoakam released his cover of Suspicious Minds in 1992 as part of the soundtrack for the film Honeymoon in Vegas, produced by Pete Anderson.  The track reached Number 35 on the country music charts and is characterized by a 15-second distortion opening that mimics planes flying overhead, followed by a prominent, bluesy country-rock arrangement that leans heavily on the song’s opening riff.

The original song was written and first recorded by Mark James in 1968, but it was Elvis Presley‘s 1969 version that became a global Number 1 hit and his final US chart-topper.  Yoakam’s interpretation pays homage to Presley’s influence, blending his own urban-country and honky-tonk style with the classic pop-country structure, featuring female background vocals and a distinct twang that distinguishes it from the original soul-rock arrangements.

We’re caught in a trap
I can’t walk out
Because I love you too much, baby
Why can’t you see
What you’re doing to me
When you don’t believe a word I’m saying?

We can’t go on together
With suspicious minds (Suspicious minds)
And we can’t build our dreams
On suspicious minds.

So, if an old friend I know
Drops by to say hello
Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?
Here we go again
Asking where I’ve been
Can’t you see these tears are real
I’m crying. (Tears I’m crying.)

We can’t go on together
With suspicious minds (Suspicious minds)
And we can’t build our dreams
On suspicious minds.

Oh, let our love survive
I’ll dry the tears from your eyes
Let’s don’t let a good thing die
Honey, you know
I’ve never lied to you
No, never lied to you.

We’re caught in a trap
I can’t walk out
Because I love you too much, baby
Why can’t you see
What you’re doing to me
When you don’t believe a word I’m saying?

We’re caught in a trap
I can’t walk out
Because I love you too much, baby

We’re caught in a trap
I can’t walk out
Because I love you too much, baby

We’re caught in a trap
I can’t walk out
Because I love you too much, baby…
