Billy Joel wrote “We Didn’t Start the Fire” in 1989 as a response to a conversation with Sean Lennon‘s friend, who claimed that “nothing happened in the ’50s” and lamented the difficulties of being 21 in the late 1980s.  Joel, who had just turned 40, aimed to prove that his generation also faced significant turmoil by creating a rapid-fire, stream-of-consciousness list of 119 historical, political, and cultural events spanning from his birth year, 1949, to the song’s release in 1989.

The song was released as the lead single from his album Storm Front and reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Its creation was partly inspired by Joel’s recent successful tour of the Soviet Union and his desire to highlight the Cold War era’s complexities, including the Korean War, the Hungarian Uprising, and the Civil Rights Movement.  Joel has noted that he wrote the lyrics first, describing the melody as “horrendous,” and he even credited Jann Wenner (founder of Rolling Stone) with suggesting the final title during a studio session.

Key details about the song include:

  • Chronological Structure: The lyrics follow a mostly chronological order, with each pair of lines generally representing a specific year.
  • Cultural Impact: The song is often cited as an educational tool, introducing younger generations to events like the Suez Canal Crisis, the U-2 spy-plane incident, and the Watergate scandal.
  • Lyric Content: It references figures such as Harry Truman, Joseph Stalin, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan, alongside cultural icons like Elvis Presley and Marlon Brando.
  • Legacy: The song’s title inspired a weekly podcast, We Didn’t Start the Fire, which examines the historical significance of the subjects mentioned in the lyrics.
