“Seventeen” is a glam metal anthem by the American band Winger, released as a single in February 1989 from their platinum-certified self-titled debut album.
The track peaked at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is widely credited with launching the band into mainstream success, particularly after heavy rotation on MTV.

The song was co-written by vocalist Kip Winger, guitarist Reb Beach, and producer Beau Hill.  Beach composed the main riff at age 15, while Winger adapted it into a chorus structure influenced by The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There.”

The track features a complex, syncopated verse rhythm inspired by Led Zeppelin’s “The Crunge,” making it technically difficult for cover bands to replicate accurately despite its catchy pop-metal hooks.

The lyrics describe an attraction to a 17-year-old girl. Winger stated he drew from personal experiences with young fans and noted that 17 was the age of consent in Colorado, meaning he initially did not perceive the subject matter as controversial.

[Intro]
Uh

[Verse 1]
Yeah, I saw sparks fly from the corner of my eye
And when I turned, ooh, it was love at first sight
I said, “Please excuse me, I didn’t catch your name
Oh, it’d be a shame not to see you again”

[Pre-Chorus]
And just when I thought she was comin’ to my door
She whispered sweet, and brought me to the floor

[Chorus]
She said, “I’m only seventeen (Seventeen)
I’ll show you love like you’ve never seen” (Oh!)
She’s only seventeen (Seventeen)
Daddy says she’s too young
But she’s old enough for me

[Verse 2]
Mm, come to my place, we can talk it over
Oh, everything goin’ down in your head
She said, “Take it easy, I need some time
Time to work it out, to make you mine”

[Pre-Chorus]
And just when I thought she was comin’ to my door
She whispered sweet, and brought me to the floor

[Chorus]
She said, “I’m only seventeen (Seventeen)
You ain’t seen love, ain’t seen nothin’ like me”
She’s only seventeen
Seventeen, yeah yeah

[Guitar Solo]
Ah
Uh

[Verse 3]
Yeah, such a bad girl, loves to work me overtime
Feels good, hah, dancin’ close to the borderline
She’s a magic mountain, she’s a leather glove
Oh, she’s my soul, it must be love

[Chorus]
She’s only seventeen (Seventeen)
Girl, she gives me love like I’ve never seen
She’s only seventeen (Seventeen)
Daddy says she’s too young
But she’s old enough for me (Seventeen)
She’s everything I need (Seventeen)
Daddy says she’s too young
But she’s old enough, old enough for me
Yeah, yeah, yeah
