“Guitars, Cadillacs” is a song by Dwight Yoakam released in June 1986 as the second single from his debut album, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. It peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and number 2 in Canada, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Country Song in 1987.  Rolling Stone ranked the track 94th on its list of the 100 Greatest Country Songs.

The song emerged from Yoakam’s early struggles in Los Angeles, where he immersed himself in the cowpunk scene while rejecting the prevailing Urban Cowboy pop-country trends.  Written in 1985 during the album’s expansion from a six-track independent EP, the track was designed to revive the Bakersfield sound of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.  Lyrically, it reflects the disillusionment of a naive outsider in Tinsel Town, finding solace in traditional country music and symbols of success like Cadillacs.

Yoakam collaborated with producer and guitarist Pete Anderson, who helped streamline the arrangements to highlight a rockabilly-infused honky-tonk style.  Anderson noted that Yoakam’s vision was to blend mountain people roots with modern drumming, creating a “hillbilly music” aesthetic that challenged Nashville’s slick production.  The Cadillac in the chorus symbolizes the “made it” status often unattainable for working-class artists, serving as a poignant emblem of lost romance and unfulfilled dreams.
