This is a song that resonates with people for many reasons. The release of the movie “The Breakfast Club” in February of 1985 and the lyrics seem to be speaking to my class in high school due to graduation in May of the same year.

Don’t You (Forget About Me) is fundamentally a song about memory and existential vulnerability rather than romantic love. The lyrics urge the listener to remember the genuine, unmasked version of themselves that was revealed during a brief moment of connection, asking that this truth not be erased when societal roles and labels are reinstated. Quintessentially the theme song for the class of 1985, Edgewater High School; Orlando, FL

“Don’t You (Forget About Me)” is a 1985 hit by the Scottish band Simple Minds, written by producer Keith Forsey and guitarist Steve Schiff specifically for the film The Breakfast Club.  The song was initially turned down by artists including Bryan Ferry, Billy Idol, and The Fixx, and the band itself was reluctant to record a track they didn’t write.

Simple Minds eventually agreed to record the song after frontman Jim Kerr was convinced by his then-wife Chrissie Hynde (of The Pretenders) and producer Keith Forsey, who befriended the band.  The track was recorded in roughly three hours in London, featuring Charlie Burchill‘s distinctive power-chord intro.

Despite the band’s initial resistance and feeling that the hit overshadowed their own songwriting, the single reached Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1985, becoming Simple Minds‘ biggest American success and a defining anthem of the 1980s.

[Intro]
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh, woah

[Verse 1]
Won’t you come see about me?
I’ll be alone, dancing, you know it, baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out, and
Love’s strange, so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby

[Chorus]
Don’t you forget about me
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t
Don’t you forget about me

[Bridge]
Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down
Will you recognize me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh, woah

[Verse 2]
Don’t you try and pretend
It’s my feeling we’ll win in the end
I won’t harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity, insecurity, ah
Don’t you forget about me
I’ll be alone, dancing, you know it, baby
Goin’ to take you apart
I’ll put us back together at heart, baby

[Chorus]
Don’t you forget about me
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t
Don’t you forget about me

[Refrain]
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
When you walk away
Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on, call my name
Will you call my name?
[Outro]
I say, la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la, la, la-la, la-la, la-la, la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la, la, la-la, la-la, la-la, la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la, la, la-la, la-la, la-la, la
When you walk on by (La-la-la-la)
And you call my name (La-la-la-la)
When you walk on by
