Only the Roman Catholic Church has authority to interpret Scripture (CCC 100)
2 Timothy 3:16 – Supports Sola Scriptura
The Roman Catholic Church is necessary for salvation (CCC 846)
There is salvation in no one but the Lord Jesus Christ, “for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Sacred Tradition equal to scripture (CCC 82)
Scripture alone is the Word of God (John 10:35; 2 Timothy 3:16,17; 2 Peter 1:20, 21;
Mark 7:1-13).
Forgiveness of sins, salvation, is by faith and works (CCC 2036, 2080, 2068)
Romans 3:28 – Refutes the necessity of works for salvation
Ephesians 2:8-9 – Emphasizes salvation by grace through faith, not works.
Penance is necessary for salvation (CCC 980)
The Roman Catholic’s practice of “penance” is unscriptural because it focuses on man’s works in order to be forgiven, not the blood of Jesus and our relationship with Him. John tells us…
“But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
Purgatory (CCC 1031 CCC 1475)
Col 2:13: 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
Mary brings us the gifts of eternal salvation (CCC 969)
Paul tells us that salvation is not of our doing rather a gift from God.
Ephesians 2:8-9: 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Romans 10:9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Mary delivers souls from death (CCC 966)
Christ alone is the Redeemer, for He alone suffered and died for sin (1 Peter 1:18,19).
Prayer to the saints (CCC 2677)
1 Timothy 2:5 Challenges praying to saints and Mary, emphasizing Christ as the sole mediator.
The sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated in the sacrifice of the Mass.
The sacrifice of the cross is finished (John 19:30).
The once-for-all sacrifice of the cross fully appeased God’s wrath against sin (Hebrews 10:12-18).
What does the Catholic Church teach about forgiveness of sins?

The following list of quotes are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the CCC. The CCC is an official Catholic document. I have summarized what the Roman Catholic Church says is necessary for salvation.
“…so that all men may attain salvation through faith, Baptism and the observance of the Commandments,” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2068).
“The authority of the Magisterium extends also to the specific precepts of the natural law, because their observance, demanded by the Creator, is necessary for salvation,” (CCC 2036).
The Decalogue [Ten Commandments] contains a privileged expression of the natural law…” (CCC 2070).
“The Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation,” (CCC 1257).
“Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation,” (CCC 846).
“This sacrament of Penance is necessary for salvation for those who have fallen after Baptism, just as Baptism is necessary for salvation for those who have not yet been reborn,” (CCC 980).
“The Church affirms that for believers the sacraments of the New Covenant are necessary for salvation, (CCC 1129).
“Service of and witness to the faith are necessary for salvation,” (CCC 1816).
“Detachment from riches is necessary for entering the Kingdom of heaven,” (CCC 2556).
According to Catholicism, there are many things that must be done to be forgiven of your sins. In summary, that which is necessary for salvation includes the church (CCC 846), baptism (CCC 1257), penance (CCC 980), sacraments (CCC 1129), service and witness to the faith (CCC 1816), keeping the ten commandments (CCC 2036 and 2070), and detachment from riches (CCC 2556).
