The Great Divorce is a 1945 Christian allegorical novel by C.S. Lewis that explores the nature of Heaven and Hell through a dream vision of a bus journey from a dreary “Grey Town” (Hell) to the “Solid Land” (Heaven).  Originally titled Who Goes Home?, the book was written as a direct response to William Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell*, refuting Blake’s idea that good and evil are compatible by asserting that they are fundamentally distinct and mutually exclusive.

The central theme is that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside; most souls in the book choose to return to Hell rather than Heaven because they are unwilling to relinquish their earthly sins, attachments, and self-centeredness.  Lewis uses this narrative to illustrate that damnation is a voluntary choice driven by pride, vanity, and a refusal to embrace God’s love, while salvation requires a complete transformation of the self.
