The once-prominent Democratic rising star Andrew Gillum, who narrowly lost the 2018 Florida gubernatorial race to Ron DeSantis, experienced another major setback following his arrest in Daphne, Alabama. The 46-year-old was pulled over for erratic driving on US Highway 98 late at night, after which an officer observed a glass pipe on the center console and conducted a vehicle search that uncovered three grams of methamphetamine, eight pre-rolled marijuana joints, and various drug paraphernalia including cut straws, pipes, and a bong.

Consequently, Gillum was charged with felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor second-degree possession of marijuana, booked into the Daphne City Jail, and subsequently transferred to the Baldwin County Correctional Facility before securing his release.
This arrest marks the latest chapter in Gillum’s downward spiral since his tenure as Tallahassee mayor and his endorsement by Barack Obama, which began with a notorious 2020 Miami Beach hotel incident involving suspected crystal methamphetamine and an unresponsive male companion.
Although Gillum avoided charges at the time by denying drug use and attributing his state to alcohol consumption before entering rehabilitation, his personal and professional life faced further turbulence, including a 2023 federal trial where a jury acquitted him of lying to the FBI regarding campaign funds. Despite attempting a public comeback in 2024 by hosting the progressive podcast Native Land Pod alongside figures like Angela Rye and Bakari Sellers, Gillum now faces these fresh felony and misdemeanor charges in Alabama, though he has yet to enter a plea or publicly comment on the arrest.
