Following an incident at a South Beach hotel room where a male escort suffered a suspected methamphetamine overdose, Andrew Gillum, the former mayor of Tallahassee and Florida’s 2018 Democratic gubernatorial nominee, announced he is entering a rehabilitation facility for alcoholism. Police responding to a medical call at the Mondrian South Beach found paramedics treating 30-year-old Travis Dyson for an apparent heart alarm while Gillum and 56-year-old Aldo Mejias were present alongside suspected crystal methamphetamine on the premises.
Although Gillum was reportedly too intoxicated to answer questions and was permitted to leave without arrest, Mejias informed authorities that he called 911 after funding the room for Dyson, arriving to find both men incapacitated, and subsequently performing chest compressions as Dyson experienced severe respiratory distress.
While Dyson was transported to Mount Sinai Medical Center in stable condition and Miami Beach police impounded the narcotics without making any immediate arrests due to a lack of physical possession, the situation drew intense public scrutiny. Gillum issued a statement apologizing for excessive drinking during a Miami wedding trip while adamantly denying methamphetamine use, yet his account was complicated when Dyson disputed the wedding celebration claim and confirmed a prior friendship dating back to the previous spring.
Amid reports detailing Dyson’s background as an escort and adult film performer, Gillum announced he would step down from all public-facing roles, including his leadership of the Forward Florida political organization and his position as a CNN contributor.
