BEHEIRA GOVERNORATE, EGYPT – Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced the discovery of a 1,500-year-old monastic complex at the Al-Qalāyā site, marking a major breakthrough in the study of early Christian history.

The excavation, led by the Supreme Council of Antiquities since 2023, has revealed a sprawling fifth-century structure that served as a central hub for monks and pilgrims alike. Officials believe the site is the second-largest monastic gathering place ever discovered, offering a rare “nucleus” view of how organized communal living first began.

Architectural Evolution

The newly unearthed building features a sophisticated layout that tracks the transition from solitary hermit life to structured community living. Key findings include:

  • 13 Multipurpose Rooms: A mix of private cells, communal living quarters, educational spaces, and kitchens.
  • A Grand Reception Hall: Located in the northern section, this hall features stone benches adorned with botanical motifs, designed to welcome senior figures and visiting scholars.
  • Religious Landmarks: A prayer room oriented to the east contains a limestone-carved cross embedded in the wall.

A Masterclass in Coptic Art

Archaeologists have recovered a wealth of visual data that Hisham El-Leithy, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council, describes as “significant sources for the study of early Coptic art.”

  • Murals & Motifs: Wall paintings depict monks in traditional attire alongside vibrant geometric designs and plant-based ornaments.
  • The “Gazelle Mural”: A standout piece shows two gazelles encircled by vegetation, believed to hold deep symbolic meaning.
  • Artifacts: Excavators found a 2-meter marble column, pottery inscribed with Coptic letters, and a funerary stele dedicated to a man named “Apa Kyr, son of Shenouda.”

Shifting the Historical Map

Historically, the desert regions of Southern Egypt were considered the primary “cradle” of monasticism. However, this find proves that a highly organized, thriving monastic culture existed simultaneously in the Nile Delta.

The presence of oyster shells and animal bones suggests a bustling daily life, while the discovery of manshubiyyat (clusters of cells) confirms that Al-Qalāyā was not just a remote outpost, but a major center for pilgrimage and spiritual education.
