Legalising DIY abortions up to the point of birth is “legally, morally, and practically complex.”
In a March 2026 House of Lords debate on Clause 208—which would decriminalize abortion for women up to birth—Mullally opposed the measure, arguing it risks eroding legal safeguards and undermining the value of human life, even if not intended to change the 24-week limit.
She advocated for public consultation and robust parliamentary processes on any abortion law changes, supporting amendments to reinstate in-person consultations and protect minors.
Sarah Mullally has consistently described abortion as a complex and nuanced issue, emphasizing that her views cannot be easily categorized as simply “pro-choice” or “pro-life.” While she previously identified as “pro-choice rather than pro-life” in a 2012 blog post, she has since clarified that her position aligns with the Church of England’s principled opposition to abortion, recognizing there may be strictly limited circumstances where it could be the preferable option.
She stresses that women facing unwanted pregnancies deserve compassion, care, and support, calling the decision to terminate a pregnancy “heart-wrenching” and complex. In a 2025 interview with Church Times, she stated, “I support the Church of England’s principled opposition to abortion,” while acknowledging the need for empathy and practical help for women in difficult situations.
