“In Your Eyes” is a 1986 single by Peter Gabriel from his fifth studio album, So. The track reached #1 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and #26 on the Hot 100, eventually earning a Gold certification from the RIAA in 2005. It is widely recognized for its iconic use in the 1989 film Say Anything…, where it was featured in a pivotal boombox scene.
The song’s origins lie in a scrapped album track titled “Sagrada,” which was inspired by Sagrada Família cathedral in Barcelona and the Winchester Mystery House. Gabriel adapted its vocal melody and chord changes, infusing the lyrics with an African musical tradition that blurs the line between romantic love and divine love. The recording features distinctive vocals from Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour, who improvised a Wolof translation of the chorus at the end of the track.
Despite rumors linking the song to Gabriel’s then-partner, actress Rosanna Arquette, Gabriel has never confirmed her as the specific muse. He described the lyrics as intentionally ambiguous, designed so that looking into a lover’s eyes could feel like seeing “the doorway to a thousand churches.” Gabriel initially refused to let the song be used in Say Anything…, mistakenly believing the film sent to him was the exploitative biopic Wired, but approved it after viewing a rough cut of Crowe’s film.
