Il Divo released their cover of Amazing Grace on their 2008 album, The Promise.  The group, a multinational classical crossover quartet formed by Simon Cowell, is known for blending operatic vocals with pop sensibilities.  Their rendition, often performed with orchestral backing and sometimes bagpipes, has become one of the most popular versions used in funerals and reflective ceremonies.
The original hymn was written in 1772 by John Newton, a former slave trader who converted to Christianity after a near-death experience at sea.  While Newton debuted the lyrics as “Faith’s Review and Expectation,” the melody known today as “New Britain” was paired with the text in 1847.  The song gained widespread popularity in the United States during the Second Great Awakening and was later cemented in cultural history when Harriet Beecher Stowe included it in her 1852 novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Over the centuries, Amazing Grace transcended its religious origins to become a universal anthem of redemption and hope.  It was adopted by gospel and folk artists in the 20th century and played a significant role in the civil rights movement, with activists like Fannie Lou Hamer leading protesters in singing it.  Its enduring appeal lies in its simple, powerful message of salvation, which resonates across different faiths and cultures.

[Verse 1]
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I’m found
Was blind, but now I see

[Verse 2]
T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear
And Grace, my fears relieved
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed

[Verse 3]
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
‘Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
And Grace will lead me home

[Instrumental Break]

[Verse 4]
When we’ve been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’ve first begun

[Verse 1]
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I’m found
Was blind, but now I see
