Party Train is a funk and electrofunk song by The Gap Band, released as a single in August 1983 from their seventh studio album, Gap Band V: Jammin’. Written by band members Charlie Wilson and Ronnie Wilson alongside producers Lonnie Simmons and Rudy Taylor, the track was recorded in 1982 at Total Experience Recording Studios in Hollywood, California. The song is characterized by its infectious bassline, rhythmic “choo-choo” sound effects, and energetic call-and-response vocals encouraging communal dancing.
Commercially, Party Train peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, spending 16 weeks on the chart, though it did not cross over to the Billboard Hot 100. The single’s promotion included a notable music video directed by Don Letts, filmed on Venice Beach and Santa Monica boardwalks in California, which featured the band dancing in the street and scenes of competitors in a boxing ring.
