Modern English released “I Melt with You” in August 1982 as the second single from their album After the Snow, produced by Hugh Jones.  The band shifted from their earlier post-punk sound to a melodic new wave style, utilizing shimmering guitar harmonies and a softer vocal delivery to contrast with their previous aggressive work.

Written by vocalist Robbie Grey in under ten minutes while sitting on the floor of a London flat, the lyrics were inspired by the Cold War anxieties and economic hardship in early 1980s Britain.  Grey described the song as a “dark love song” depicting a couple making love as an atomic bomb drops, with the title metaphorically representing lovers melting together in the thermal flash of a nuclear explosion.

Although the single initially peaked at only #78 on the Billboard Hot 100, it achieved lasting fame through heavy rotation on MTV and its feature in the 1983 cult film Valley Girl.  The track is now recognized as an iconic anthem of the era, blending upbeat, optimistic musical tones with apocalyptic lyrical themes of existential denial and borrowed time.

[Verse 1]
Moving forwards, using all my breath
Making love to you was never second best
I saw the world crashing all around your face
Never really knowing it was always
Mesh and lace

[Chorus]
I’ll stop the world and melt with you
You’ve seen the difference
And it’s getting better all the time
There’s nothing you and I won’t do
I’ll stop the world and melt with you

[Verse 2]
Dream of better lives
The kind which never hate
Trapped in a state of imaginary grace
I made a pilgrimage
To save this human’s race
Never comprehending
The race had long gone by

[Chorus]
I’ll stop the world and melt with you
You’ve seen the difference
And it’s getting better all the time
There’s nothing you and I won’t do
I’ll stop the world and melt with you

[Bridge]
The future’s open wide
The future’s open wide

[Chorus]
I’ll stop the world and melt with you
I’ve seen some changes
But it’s getting better all the time
There’s nothing you and I won’t do
I’ll stop the world and melt with you

[Bridge]
The future’s open wide
Hmm hmm hmm
Hmm hmm hmm hmm
Hmm hmm hmm
Hmm hmm hmm hmm

[Chorus]
I’ll stop the world and melt with you
You’ve seen the difference
And it’s getting better all the time
There’s nothing you and I won’t do
I’ll stop the world and melt with you
I’ll stop the world and melt with you
I’ll stop the world and melt with you
I’ll stop the world and melt with you
I’ll stop the world and melt with you
