“Key Largo” is a pop ballad written and performed by Bertie Higgins, released as his debut single in September 1981 from the album Just Another Day in Paradise. The song was co-written with producer Sonny Limbo and draws primary inspiration from the 1948 film noir Key Largo, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, as well as romantic motifs from Casablanca.
The lyrics emerged from Higgins’ personal heartbreak after his girlfriend, Beverly Seaberg, left him in 1980. Writing from a place of emotional turmoil while living in Atlanta, Higgins crafted the song as a “plea” for her return, using the glamorous on-screen romance of Bogart and Bacall as a metaphor for his own lost love. The track features a yacht rock-influenced sound with steel guitar and synthesizers, blending themes of regret with Hollywood nostalgia.
Commercially, “Key Largo” became Higgins’ signature hit, peaking at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1982 and reaching No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart for two weeks. It was certified gold by the RIAA and remains a staple of the “trop rock” genre. Interestingly, the song’s success helped reconcile Higgins and Seaberg; they became engaged after the hit’s release, married in 1982, and had two children before divorcing in 1995.
[Verse 1]
Wrapped around each other
Trying so hard to stay warm
That first cold winter together
Lying in each other’s arms
Watching those old movies
Falling in love so desperately
Honey, I was your hero
And you were my leading lady
[Chorus]
We had it all
Just like Bogie and Bacall
Starring in our own late, late show
Sailing away to Key Largo
Here’s lookin’ at you, kid
Missing all the things we did
We can find it once again, I know (Ooh, ooh)
Just like they did in Key Largo (Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh)
[Verse 2]
Honey, can’t you remember?
We played all the parts
That sweet scene of surrender
When you gave me your heart
Please say you will
Play it again
‘Cause I love you still
Baby, this can’t be the end
[Chorus]
We had it all (We had it all)
Just like Bogie and Bacall
Starring in our old late, late show (Ooh, ooh)
Sailing away to Key Largo
Here’s lookin’ at you, kid (Here’s lookin’ at you, kid)
Missing all the things we did
We can find it once again, I know (Ooh, ooh)
Just like they did in Key Largo
[Outro]
We had it all (We had it all)
Just like Bogie and Bacall
Starring in our old late, late show (Ooh, ooh)
Sailing away to Key Largo
Here’s lookin’ at you, kid (Here’s lookin’ at you, kid)
Missing all the things we did…
