“Free Bird” is a power ballad by Lynyrd Skynyrd that serves as the closing track on their 1973 debut album, (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd).  Written by guitarist Allen Collins (music) and vocalist Ronnie Van Zant (lyrics), the song evolved over several years from a complex chord progression into a nine-minute epic renowned for its emotional depth and extended guitar solos.

The song’s origins trace back to 1970 in Jacksonville, Florida.  Collins composed the initial music at the band’s rehearsal space, the Hell House, but Van Zant initially struggled to write lyrics, believing there were too many chord changes.  The breakthrough came after a personal moment where Collins’ girlfriend, Kathy Johns, asked him, “If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?” This question became the song’s opening line, inspiring Van Zant to write lyrics about a restless individual unable to settle down in a relationship.

Production involved several key contributions that shaped the final track. Roadie Billy Powell improvised the signature piano intro, while producer Al Kooper suggested adding organ to enhance the song’s dynamic range.  Although the band initially recorded a shorter version, the final studio take captured their raw energy, featuring dual guitar harmonies by Collins and Gary Rossington, and later Ed King.

[Instrumental Intro]

[Verse 1]
If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on, now
‘Cause there’s too many places I’ve got to see

[Pre-Chorus]
But if I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn’t be the same

[Chorus]
‘Cause I’m as free as a bird now
And this bird you cannot change
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird you cannot change
Lord knows I can’t change

[Instrumental Bridge]

[Verse 2]
Bye-bye, baby, it’s been a sweet love, yeah, yeah
Though this feeling, I can’t change
But, please, don’t take it so badly
‘Cause Lord knows I’m to blame

[Pre-Chorus]
But, if I stay here with you, girl
Things just couldn’t be the same

[Chorus]
‘Cause I’m as free as a bird now
And this bird you cannot change
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird you cannot change
Lord knows I can’t change
Lord, help me, I can’t change

[Post-Chorus]
Lord, I can’t change
Won’t you fly high, free bird? Yeah

[Guitar Solo]
