Tom Sawyer is a 1981 progressive rock anthem by the Canadian band Rush, released as the opening track on their multiplatinum album Moving Pictures.  The song is widely considered the band’s signature track and a defining piece of early 1980s rock music.

The song’s literary roots trace back to Mark Twain’s 1876 novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which all three band members had studied in school.  However, the direct inspiration came from Pye Dubois, a poet and lyricist for the Canadian band Max Webster.  Around 1980, Dubois sent drummer and lyricist Neil Peart a poem titled “Louie the Warrior” (sometimes cited as Louis the Lawyer), which portrayed a modern-day rebel inspired by Twain’s character.

Peart significantly reworked Dubois’s concept, transforming it into a philosophical statement about individualism and independence. He added autobiographical elements, describing the process as “reconciling the boy and man in myself” and exploring the difference between perception and reality. The resulting lyrics painted a portrait of a free-spirited individualist who refuses to conform to societal expectations.

Musical Development and Recording

Musically, the track was developed through jam sessions during a summer rehearsal at Ronnie Hawkins’ farm outside Toronto.  This period marked a shift for Rush toward tighter, more economical song structures. A key innovation was Geddy Lee’ use of the Oberheim OB-X polyphonic synthesizer, which created the song’s iconic, pulsing opening riff and distinct “growling” sound.

Despite its eventual status as a classic, the recording process was fraught with difficulty. The band found the song challenging to mix and record, with Lee admitting he became so fatigued by the process that he initially considered leaving it off the album. Guitarist Alex Lifeson crafted his famous solo by combining various takes, while Peart’s drumming featured complex, mathematically precise rhythms that became a hallmark of the band’s style. The song was released in May 1981 and peaked at No. 44 on the Billboard Hot 100.

[Intro]
A modern-day warrior
Mean, mean stride
Today’s Tom Sawyer
Mean, mean pride

[Verse 1]
Though his mind is not for rent
Don’t put him down as arrogant
His reserve a quiet defense
Riding out the day’s events
The river

[Chorus]
What you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the mist
Catch the myth
Catch the mystery
Catch the drift

[Bridge]
The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his skies are wide
Today’s Tom Sawyer, he gets high on you
And the space he invades, he gets by on you

[Instrumental]

[Verse 2]
No, his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful, yet discontent
He knows changes aren’t permanent
But change is

[Chorus]
And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the witness
Catch the wit
Catch the spirit
Catch the spit

[Refrain]
The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide

[Outro]
Exit the warrior
Today’s Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the energy you trade
He gets right on to
The friction of the day
