“Way Cool Jr.” is a glam metal and blues rock single by the American band Ratt, released in December 1988 as the lead track from their fourth album, Reach for the Sky.  Written by Stephen Pearcy, Warren DeMartini, and producer Beau Hill, the song marked a stylistic shift for the band, introducing a swingy, blues-influenced sound that distinguished them from their hard rock peers.

The song’s lyrics describe a charismatic, sunglasses-wearing young man leading a high life while dealing illicit drugs, serving as an ironic commentary on the hollow, plastic nature of the 1980s rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. While officially a fictional character, many fans and critics speculate the song was a cautionary tale or direct reference to guitarist Robbin Crosby, who was struggling with a severe heroin addiction at the time.

Musically, the track is defined by Warren DeMartini’s fierce, blues-based guitar riffs and drummer Bobby Blotzer’s unique swing rhythm, which Pearcy credited as essential to the song’s success.  It peaked at number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 16 on the Mainstream Rock chart, representing Ratt’s final major Hot 100 hit before their popularity waned in the early 1990s.  The music video, directed by Marty Callner, features a first-person perspective of the protagonist navigating Hollywood clubs, reinforcing the song’s themes of swagger and superficiality.

[Intro]
Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh

[Verse 1]
New kid in town
Got fancy clothes
Old T-Bird car, baby
And you can tell he knows
He said, “Where is all the action in this town?”

[Verse 2]
Starts workin’ on the women
Comes on real slick
Heard enough about sin, girl
Gonna make it stick
Hey, what makes him so special anyhow?

[Pre-Chorus]
She said, “So good lookin’, that’s a fact
Steel guitar slung across his back”
The girls all know he’s Way Cool Jr.
Check him out on his good side

[Verse 3]
Heard he came from Memphis
Somewhere down south
Started hangin’ with the blues crowd
That’s how he got that crazy sound
What is all this talkin’ goin’ ’round?

[Pre-Chorus]
She said, “So good lookin’, turns me on
Out all night, keeps me up ’til dawn”
The girls all know he’s Way Cool Jr.
You know you can’t have fire without the flame
Can’t keep the fortune without the fame
That’s how he makes it when he’s on his own

[Chorus]
Way Cool Jr.
He’s gonna live it up or never live it down
Way Cool Jr.
He’s the hottest thing to ever hit this town

[Post-Chorus]
Go, man, go

[Guitar Solo]
[Pre-Chorus]
She said, “So good lookin’ and that’s a fact
Steel guitar scratched off the back”
Everybody knows it’s Way Cool Jr.
You know you can’t have fire without the flame
You can’t keep the fortune without the fame
That’s how he makes it when he’s on his own

[Chorus]
Way Cool Jr.
Oh, he’s comin’ ’round now and then
Way Cool Jr.
He’s gonna live it up or never live it down
Way Cool Jr.

[Guitar Solo]

[Outro]
Way Cool Jr. (Junior, junior, junior)
