Meritage Hospitality Group, a major franchisee operating 314 Wendy’s restaurants across 15 states, officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Michigan. Headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the company employs approximately 9,000 workers. Court documents reveal that Meritage owes Wendy’s International nearly $25 million.
The bankruptcy filing follows mounting financial strain exacerbated by six consecutive quarters of same-store sales declines for the fast-food chain, alongside a sharp drop in the parent company’s stock value over the past three years. Wendy’s U.S. same-store sales fell 7% in the most recent quarter, prompting the parent company to issue an immediate termination notice for Meritage’s franchise agreement on September 16, following more than a year of failed negotiations.
Meritage’s footprint spans multiple states, with Michigan serving as its largest market with 54 locations, followed by 44 restaurants each in Georgia and Florida. Despite the restructuring, the company has asked the court for permission to maintain normal operations regarding employee wages, compensation, benefits, gift cards, and loyalty programs. Meanwhile, Wendy’s has emphasized its commitment to supporting the broader franchise system and reinforcing the long-term health of the brand.
