Perseverance of the Saints (Eternal Security) Many denominations, such as Presbyterians and Baptists, teach that true Christians cannot lose their salvation.  This view argues that salvation is a free gift based on God’s sovereign power, not human performance. Key biblical support includes John 10:28-29, where Jesus states that no one can snatch believers from His or the Father’s hand, and Romans 8:38-39, which asserts that nothing can separate believers from God’s love.  Proponents argue that those who fall away or abandon the faith were never truly saved, citing 1 John 2:19: “They went out from us, but they were not really of us.” Under this view, salvation is secure because it depends on God’s promise and the indwelling Holy Spirit as a guarantee.

Conditional Security (Possibility of Falling Away) Other traditions, including Methodists, Lutherans, and some Pentecostal groups, teach that it is possible for a Christian to lose their salvation.  This perspective emphasizes human free will and the necessity of continuing in faith. Biblical passages often cited include Hebrews 6:4-6 and Hebrews 10:26-29, which warn that those who have been enlightened and then fall away cannot be restored to repentance.  Additionally, Galatians 5:4 speaks of falling from grace, and 2 Peter 2:20-21 describes those who escape corruption only to be entangled again.  In this framework, apostasy (deliberate rejection of Christ) or persistent, unrepentant sin can result in the loss of salvation.
