In Joe Rogan Experience #897, guest Hunter Maats explained Thomas Sowell’s thesis from the book Black Rednecks and White Liberals, which argues that much of modern African American culture is not an isolated invention but was adopted from the white southern redneck culture of the Antebellum South.

Maats detailed Sowell’s key points regarding this cultural evolution:

  • Origins of Ghetto Culture: Sowell contends that the cultural traits often associated with urban black ghettos (such as specific linguistic patterns, attitudes toward violence, and work habits) originated in the “cracker culture” of the British Isles (specifically Welsh, Highland Scots, and border English) and were brought to the American South.
  • Adoption by Enslaved People: Because enslaved Africans were stripped of their original African cultures, they adopted the surrounding white southern culture to survive, leading to a convergence of cultural behaviors between poor whites and blacks in the South.
  • Cultural vs. Racial Explanations: Maats highlighted Sowell’s argument that liberals often misattribute socioeconomic disparities to racism, whereas Sowell uses the example of West Indian immigrants (who also faced slavery and racism but retained a different cultural heritage) to demonstrate that cultural values (such as the emphasis on education and hard work) are the primary drivers of economic success.
  • Reception: Maats noted that Sowell’s objective, culture-focused analysis is often rejected by liberal America, which prefers to view these issues through a lens of systemic racism rather than cultural evolution.

Maats presented Sowell’s work as a critical framework for understanding that intelligence and success are largely shaped by the culture one inherits or adopts, rather than racial biological determinants.
