During a recent segment of his HBO show “Real Time,” Bill Maher told his audience that the Democratic Party is experiencing a hostile takeover by communists, pointing to a stunned silence from the crowd to emphasize his point.

Using a clip shared on X, Maher argued that when President Donald Trump labels the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) as communist, the description is accurate, despite Trump’s history of falsehoods. To build his case, Maher read statements from DSA candidates, noted that the group’s platform borrows from Karl Marx, and cited the influence of a faction called the Marxist Unity Group, which aims for a classless society.

The audience fell silent when Maher highlighted a social media post from a top mayoral aide urging voters to back communist candidates, prompting Maher to tell the crowd that people need to realize this shift is actively happening.

Framing the movement as the colonization of his own party, Maher noted that only a small group of lawmakers signed a centrist “Promise to America” pledge declaring support for capitalism, though Newsweek reported the actual count includes 10 House members and five candidates led by Reps. Tom Suozzi and Adam Gray. Maher, who previously hinted at shifting loyalties during conversations with Vice President JD Vance and ABC’s Jonathan Karl, concluded by declaring that he would sooner vote for former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin than any DSA-aligned Democrat, calling Palin a “bimbo” who could still find something to admire about the country.
