Several organizations across the United States are currently offering special pet adoption opportunities. The KC Pet Project in Kansas City is waiving all adoption fees through December 31 as part of its “Home for the Holidays” initiative, including cats, dogs, puppies, kittens, and small animals. Similarly, PAWS Chicago is hosting a New Year, New Friend Adoption Event from December 26 to December 31, waiving fees on select shelter pets. In Waco, Texas, the Pet Circle Regional Animal Center is offering free adoptions for all black-and-white dogs through January 4, aiming to help these often-overlooked animals find homes.

For those seeking pets in specific cities, the City of San José Animal Care and Services requires in-person adoptions at their Care Center, with adoption hours from noon to 4 p.m. on Mondays and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekends. The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas helps over 20,000 animals annually find safety, healing, and loving homes through sheltering, adoption, and community programs. In New York City, the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) are offering waived fees for large dogs and adult cats, with a $25 fee for kittens, during a special pop-up adoption event.

Nationwide, Petfinder connects adopters with over 14,500 shelters and rescues, allowing users to search for dogs, cats, and other pets near them. However, users should be aware that Petfinder is a content aggregator, and information may be outdated if shelters or rescues do not update their listings promptly. Some shelters, like the one in San José, encourage prospective adopters to visit in person or contact organizations directly to verify availability and adoption processes. Additionally, some adopters have reported challenges with overly restrictive online applications that may deter qualified families, highlighting the need for more accessible adoption pathways.
