Lionsgate has officially announced that Mel Gibson’s highly anticipated biblical epic, The Resurrection of the Christ, has wrapped principal photography in Italy ahead of schedule and will hit theaters in two parts. Acting as the follow-up to his 2004 cultural phenomenon The Passion of the Christ, “Part One” is scheduled for release on May 6, 2027, followed by “Part Two” on May 25, 2028. The sequel features a new lead, with Jaakko Ohtonen replacing Jim Caviezel as Jesus, alongside a supporting cast that includes Mariela Garriga and Rupert Everett. Gibson, who spent over two decades developing the project as a deeply personal mission, co-wrote the screenplay with Randall Wallace. Rather than a straightforward Gospel retelling, the film aims to explore complex theological themes like Hell, Sheol, and the fall of angels, with Gibson promising a highly ambitious, visionary cinematic experience.
