Christians are not required by God to tithe. The New Testament contains no command for believers to give a specific percentage of their income, and the practice is not mandated for the Christian church.

  • Old Testament vs. New Covenant: Tithing was a requirement under the Mosaic Law to support the Levitical priesthood and temple worship, systems that no longer exist.  Since Christians are under the New Covenant and not the Law of Moses, the legal obligation to tithe does not apply.
  • Jesus and the Apostles: Jesus referred to tithing as part of the Jewish Law, and the Apostles never instructed New Testament believers to tithe.  There is not a single passage in the New Testament that commands Christians to give 10% of their income.
  • New Testament Giving: Instead of a mandatory tithe, Christians are called to give freewill offerings generously and cheerfully.  The standard is to give as one has decided in their heart, not out of compulsion, with no specified minimum or maximum percentage (2 Corinthians 9:7).

23% according to Old Testament Law

OT Tithe (Replaced by the New Covenant)

10% – Levitical tithe(Num18:21)
10% – Festival Tithe(Deut14:22)
3.3% – Welfare Tithe(for the poor) (10\3=3.3%) Deut14: 28
