Shortly after being escorted out of the White House Correspondents Association dinner by the Secret Service following a shooting, President Trump held an impromptu press briefing Saturday evening at the White House. Still dressed in his tuxedo, he praised the swift response of law enforcement and noted that one officer had been shot but was saved by his bulletproof vest. The suspected shooter was identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, whom Trump called a “sick person” who attacked an event symbolizing free speech and the Constitution. Trump assured the public that the dinner would be rescheduled and vowed not to let the incident disrupt American society.
Trump used the moment to call on all Americans to “resolve their differences peacefully,” while striking a defiant tone, saying he had fought to remain at the dinner but deferred to Secret Service protocol. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel also spoke briefly, praising law enforcement’s response and promising that charges against the suspect would be filed shortly. During the Q&A with reporters — many of whom were still in formal attire after fleeing the dinner — Trump said he initially thought the gunshot was a tray dropping. When asked why he keeps being targeted, he suggested that the most impactful leaders tend to attract such threats, framing the attempts as a reflection of how significantly he believes he has changed the country.
