Seminoles Top Duquesne, 47-7, In Week 0 Season Opener
Jordan Travis completed 11 of 15 passes for 207 yards and three Florida State running backs rushed for over 100 yards each in FSU’s 47-7 win over Duquesne to open the 2022 season. The Seminoles mounted six consecutive scoring drives in just over three quarters of play and the Nole defense was stifling in giving FSU the win in Doak Campbell Stadium and it’s first 1-0 start since the 2016 season.
Running back Treshaun Ward led a ferocious ground game for the Seminoles with a career-high 127 yards on 14 carries for a career-high 9.1 yards per carry average. Trey Benson (105) and Lawrance Toafili (101) also gained over 100 yards marking the first time in school history that three running backs gained 100 rushing in the same game. Florida State’s 406 yards rushing in the game are the most since totaling 478 in a 55-35 victory over USF on September 24, 2016.
Florida State scored the first 33 points of the game before surrendering a touchdown to the visiting Dukes. The Seminoles scored on seven of their first eight drives, as the offense was stopped only once through the first three quarters. For the game, the Seminoles scored on eight of their 11 possessions and punted only once.
Continue reading30-year mortgage rate back over 5%
Average long-term U.S. mortgage rates soared this week in acontinued volatile market as the key 30-year loan rate jumped back over 5%.
Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac reports that the 30-year rate rose to 5.22% from 4.99% last week. By contrast, the rate stood at 2.87% a year ago.
The average rate on 15-year, fixed-rate mortgages, popular among those looking to refinance their homes, increased to 4.59% from 4.26%.
Last week the 30-year rate fell below 5% for the first time in four months, days after the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by three-quarters of a point in its most aggressive drive in over three decades to tame record-high inflation.

Woman arrested after hit-and-run in Casselberry that killed 63-year-old man walking dog
A 22-year-old woman has been arrested in connection to a fatal hit-and-run from June that killed a 63-year-old man who was out walking his dog in Casselberry.
The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed Tuesday that Maya Calzada of Winter Park has been arrested in the deadly crash. She’s facing several charges including negligent homicide and failure to remain at the scene of a crash involving death.
Troopers said the victim, Jorge Albert De Castro, was struck and killed on June 1 near the intersection of Eagle Circle and Shadow Oak Drive two months ago.
FHP said an Audi Q7 SUV was traveling westbound on Eagle Circle when De Castro tried crossing from one sidewalk to another across the street and he was hit.
Troopers said after the crash, Calzada left the scene. De Castro was pronounced dead at the scene. The dog was unharmed and was taken into the care of animal control.
A silver bumper cover from the silver Audi was located at the scene of the crash. According to an arrest report from FHP, Calzada filed a stolen vehicle false report for the SUV.
The SUV was found abandoned the next day by Casselberry police about one mile from the crash, troopers said. Photos released by troopers said it appeared that the vehicle caught on fire.
According to the arrest affidavit, on the night of the crash, Calzada was partying at the Cabana Key apartments in Casselberry.
A man who lived in the unit came home from work, reportedly got into an argument with another man who was there and asked them to leave.
About an hour later, Calzada reportedly returned to the apartment complex with the damaged SUV. When asked where the damage came from, the report states that Calzada told one of the men that she “hit an old man.” Another man at the house reportedly began trying to cover up the evidence before setting it on fire.

Scott Joseph’s 2022 Best Outdoor Dining Foodster Award Winner
Results are in for the 2022 Best Outdoor Dining Foodster Award for Independent Restaurants. The Tap Room at Dubsdread takes first place. Only 1 vote separated 2nd and 3d:
The Tap Room at Dubsdread has been voted Best Outdoor Dining in our 2022 Foodster Award for Independent Restaurants. Maxine’s On Shine was second and The Garlic in New Smyrna Beach third. Only one vote separated second and third places.
Tap Room was a runaway first place winner. Its wraparound veranda has long been a favorite for lunches, dinners and Sunday brunches.
In placing her vote, Betsy Landesman Jacobs wrote: “Picked The Tap Room for their beautiful porch overlooking the golf course. A bit different from the rest, and so peaceful. Good food, great staff and service.”
Maxine’s On Shine, which was also recently honored as a Bib Gourmand recommendation in the inaugural Florida Michelin Guide, expanded its outdoor dining area beyond its front sidewalk area during the pandemic to include gazebos in the small side parking lot. Although the expanded outdoor dining was meant to be temporary, Maxine’s management has petitioned the city to make it permanent.
The Garlic, an Italian restaurant, is known for its overgrown garden dining area.
Smoke Point – Common Oils and Fats
Avocado Oil, (unrefined): Smoke point: 520°F
High in monounsaturated fat (typically touted as a “good” fat), avocado oil has a smoke point of about 520˚, which makes it an efficient pantry item: Use it for sautéing, roasting, searing, and vinaigrettes alike. There’s no need to refrigerate it when opened, although it should be stored in a cool, dark cupboard. Use for searing, frying, grilling, roasting, baking and salad dressings. High in heart-healthy monounsaturated fat (70 per cent).
Safflower Oil: Smoke Point 510°F
With a smoke point of 440-450˚, sunflower oil is the pantry hero for all things sear- and sauté-related (like these hearty salmon steaks, for example). Because it is pressed from seeds, it does turn rancid quicker than other oils, so store it in a cool place and use within a year, max. Safflower seed oil is flavorless and colorless, and nutritionally similar to sunflower oil. It is used mainly in cosmetics and as a cooking oil, in salad dressing, and for the production of margarine
Rice Bran Oil: Smoke Point 490°F
Rice bran oil is the oil extracted from the hard outer brown layer of rice called chaff (rice husk). It is known for its high smoke point of 232 °C (450 °F) and mild flavor, making it suitable for high-temperature cooking methods such as stir frying and deep frying.

Fauci concedes that COVID-19 vaccines do not protect “overly well”
One of the things that’s clear from the data [is] that even though vaccines – because of the high degree of transmissibility of this virus – don’t protect overly well, as it were, against infection, they protect quite well against severe disease leading to hospitalization and death. And I believe that’s the reason, Neil, why at my age, being vaccinated and boosted, even though it didn’t protect me against infection, I feel confident that it made a major role in protecting me from progressing to severe disease. And that’s very likely why I had a relatively mild course. So my message to people who seem confused because people who are vaccinated get infected – the answer is if you weren’t vaccinated, the likelihood [is] you would have had [a] more severe course than you did have when you were vaccinated.
