A 22-year-old woman, Maya Alicia Calzada of Winter Park, was arrested on July 29, 2022, in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident in Casselberry that resulted in the death of 63-year-old Jorge Albert De Castro, who was walking his dog on June 1, 2022. Calzada faces multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, failure to remain at the scene of a crash involving death, and perjury. The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. on Eagle Circle near Shadow Oak Drive, where De Castro was struck by a silver Audi Q7 SUV and pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle was later found abandoned and burned a mile from the crash site, with evidence linking Calzada to the crime, including a false report of the car being stolen and testimony from witnesses at a party where she allegedly admitted to hitting an old man.

The community expressed relief at the arrest, with neighbors and family members stating it brought a sense of closure, though no amount of justice could replace the loss of De Castro, described as a kind, fun-loving man and a skilled musician.

The victim, Jorge Albert De Castro, was a longtime resident of Casselberry, having moved there in 1990, and was born in Jatibonico, Cuba, arriving in the U.S. in 1962 with his mother.

Calzada was reportedly partying at the Cabana Key apartments in Casselberry on the night of the crash and returned to the complex with the damaged SUV, where she allegedly told a friend she had “hit an old man”.

The silver Audi Q7 SUV involved in the crash was found the following day, abandoned and partially burned, with a silver bumper cover and paint chips recovered from the scene.

Calzada was arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail, facing charges including negligent homicide/vehicular manslaughter and perjury.
