Voskamp thinks about God in a dangerous way as she, like many Christian women authors, speaks of God’s love for them erotically. She romanticizes her relationship with Christ. This heresy is called theoerocism, sometimes called theoeroticism. It’s thinking of God’s love in terms of the Greek word eros rather than agape. In other words, she thinks of Christ as a lover — not just a savior.

3. Victoria Osteen
“Victoria Osteen, the copastor with Joel Osteen of Lakewood Church, gave a message to the congregation in August 2014. Here’s a partial transcript of what she said.
“I just want to encourage everyone of us to realize when we obey God we’re not doing it for God. I mean, that’s one way to look at it. Were doing it ourselves. Because God takes pleasure when we’re happy. That’s the thing that gives him the greatest joy this morning. I want you to know this morning just do good for your own self. Do good cuz God wants you to be happy.. When you come to church when you worship him you’re not doing it for God really. You’re doing it for yourself because that’s what makes God happy. Amen?”2
The problems with her statement are obvious. First of all, she’s preaching humanism, not Christ-centered truth. Humanism is the philosophy that humanity is the standard of righteousness and human betterment is the goal of our actions and that God is not needed. Humanism is defined as…
• “any system or mode of thought or action in which human interests, values, and dignity predominate.”3
• “a doctrine, attitude, or way of life centered on human interests or values.”4
• “Humanism is a progressive lifestance that, without supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead meaningful, ethical lives capable of adding to the greater good of humanity.”5
In the third definition above, the American Humanist Organization defines humanism as a “lifestance” without God that seeks to add “to the greater good of humanity.” In Victoria’s statement, she said doing good is not for God but for ourselves. Therefore, she is saying that God is not the standard of what is good. God is not the reason we should do good. Instead, we should do good because it pleases ourselves. This humanistic blasphemy should never be uttered from any pulpit in which the Christian gospel is supposed to be stated. Instead, this narcigesis6 is what is given by her. In other words, God is here for you, he wants you to be happy, he wants you to be comfortable, he wants you to be healthy, he wants you to be wealthy. It is about you, not about Jesus.
The second problem is that Victoria Osteen’s statements violate Scripture.”
