How should you refer to your church leader? Most of us use the term pastor, but some use the term elder and even bishop. If you are confused by these different denominational terms you are not alone. A bishop is typically equated with Catholic or Eastern Orthodox churches, although Anglican and a few Lutheran churches also use the term. The term elder is often associated with the Mormon church and the young men you meet in ties on your front porch, though more evangelical churches are utilizing the term elder now. For most people, the term pastor is an easily-recognizable term referring to the spiritual leader of a church.

Common Terms and Associations

  • Pastor: The most recognizable term for a church’s spiritual leader.
  • Elder: Often linked to Mormon missionaries or increasingly used in evangelical churches.
  • Bishop: Typically associated with Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, or some Lutheran traditions.

Biblical Analysis

The New Testament uses three Greek words for church leadership, emphasizing different aspects but describing one role:

  • Elder (presbuteros): Most frequent term, implying maturity, wisdom, and age (e.g., James 5:14; 1 Peter 5:1). It refers to leaders in Jewish and early Christian communities.
  • Bishop (episkopos): Translated as “overseer,” used less often (about 10 times), focusing on the responsibility of oversight or guardianship.
  • Pastor (poimen): Means “shepherd,” stressing the act of caring for and guiding the flock (e.g., Eph 4:11; Acts 20:28; 1 Pet 5:2).

Interchangeability

Scripture shows these terms as synonyms for the same individual, not a hierarchy:

  • Acts 20:17-38: Paul addresses Ephesian elders, calling them overseers (bishops) tasked with shepherding (pastoring) the church.
  • 1 Peter 5:1-2: Peter instructs elders to shepherd the flock and exercise oversight.
  • Titus 1:5-9 (cf. 1 Timothy 3:1-7): Elders are described with overseer qualifications.

This overlap is illustrated in a Venn diagram by Colin Smothers, showing elder (nature: maturity/wisdom), bishop/overseer (function: oversight), and pastor (process: shepherding) as interconnected.

Conclusion

Biblically, these terms denote one office, contrasting with some denominational hierarchies. You can call your church leader pastor, elder, or bishop—they’re essentially the same.
