Florida State hangs on for last-second, thrilling 24-23 win over LSU
In the days leading up to Florida State’s Sunday night showdown with LSU, Florida State football coach Mike Norvell said he was excited about the game because it would give him a chance to show off the guys he gets to coach.
And it took every second of the game, but the Seminoles found a way to pull out a 24-23 victory with a blocked extra point — their second blocked kick of the game — to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Redshirt freshman Shyheim Brown blocked the kick after LSU scored a touchdown on the final play of regulation.
“What a finish,” Norvell said, “We talked to our team all week that this game could come down to one play, to one opportunity. And, you know, as you watch throughout the course of the game, I thought our guys put on display an incredible heart. You know, the passion which they played with, just the effort, the physicality, I thought we dominated the game for the majority of it. Obviously, there at the end, you know, we had some things that happened that we just can’t have. But the one thing that happened on the last play is what we absolutely need.
“It’s determination. It’s heart. It’s a willingness that, even after a disappointing moment, our guys responded.”
After falling behind by a field goal on the game’s opening drive, FSU took its first lead on a 39-yard flea-flicker from Jordan Travis to Ontaria “Pokey” Wilson. The Seminoles had a chance to extend their lead just before halftime, but a fourth-down pass from Travis fell incomplete, and the lead stayed at 7-3 at halftime.

Seminoles Top Duquesne, 47-7, In Week 0 Season Opener
Jordan Travis completed 11 of 15 passes for 207 yards and three Florida State running backs rushed for over 100 yards each in FSU’s 47-7 win over Duquesne to open the 2022 season. The Seminoles mounted six consecutive scoring drives in just over three quarters of play and the Nole defense was stifling in giving FSU the win in Doak Campbell Stadium and it’s first 1-0 start since the 2016 season.
Running back Treshaun Ward led a ferocious ground game for the Seminoles with a career-high 127 yards on 14 carries for a career-high 9.1 yards per carry average. Trey Benson (105) and Lawrance Toafili (101) also gained over 100 yards marking the first time in school history that three running backs gained 100 rushing in the same game. Florida State’s 406 yards rushing in the game are the most since totaling 478 in a 55-35 victory over USF on September 24, 2016.
Florida State scored the first 33 points of the game before surrendering a touchdown to the visiting Dukes. The Seminoles scored on seven of their first eight drives, as the offense was stopped only once through the first three quarters. For the game, the Seminoles scored on eight of their 11 possessions and punted only once.

Seminole fans got their first chance to take a look at the 2022 Florida State Football team on Saturday as the ‘Noles offense racked up 38 points at the annual Garnet and Gold Spring Game.
The format included two traditional scrimmage quarters followed by the “Main Event” which featured guest coaches Danny Kannell and Peter Boulware calling plays against EJ Manuel and Bryant McFadden. FSU’s offense started slow but its first signs of life came in the form of Trey Benson. The Oregon transfer running back led the way for Seminole ball carriers with 77 yards on seven touches including a long of 22.
Jordan Travis led the passing attack for Florida State, going 7-13 for 71 yards but backup Tate Rodemaker fetched the game’s only touchdown pass on 5-11 passing for 64 yards. As the offense found its groove so too did the playmakers with Lawrence Toafili, DJ Williams and Mycah Pittman all finding the endzone.
“Seeing the response from the offense and being able to create some of the explosive plays there in the second quarter, it’s what you want in a spring game,” remarked Head Coach Mike Norvell of his team’s performance. “[There were] good things on both sides of the ball and I like seeing some of our newcomers have that first experience in front of our fans.”
Defensively FSU was led up front by Jared Verse and Malakai Menzer who both registered two solo sacks with LB Stephen Dix Jr. also recording six tackles (three solo).
The ‘Noles will hold one more practice on Tuesday, April 12th before heading into the offseason.
Legendary FSU coach Bobby Bowden tests positive for COVID-19
Former Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden has tested positive for the coronavirus.
ABC 27 spoke to Bowden on Monday, who confirmed the news.
Despite the positive diagnosis, Bowden, 90, said he’s doing pretty good and is waiting to see what’s going to happen.
While he did not say if any of his other household members have also tested positive, Bowden told ABC 27 they are all going to get tested again Monday.
Bowden said he does not know when he contracted it and did not mention when exactly he tested positive.
During his 34 years as Florida State’s head coach he had only one losing season in 1976. From 1987 to 2000, the Seminoles finished every season with at least 10 wins and in the top 5 of the Associated Press College Football Poll, and won the national championship in 1993 and 1999.
Coach Prime Time? Deion Sanders reportedly set to take over college football program
Deion Sanders is reportedly getting into the coaching game.
The NFL Hall of Famer has experience coaching in the Under Armour All-American Game and was reportedly a candidate for the open head coaching positions at Arkansas and Florida State this offseason but now it appears the former college and NFL superstar is set to take over his first college football program.
According to Kenn Rashad of HBCU Sports, Sanders will be named the new head coach HBCU program, Jackson State.
You may recall, during an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show” during Super Bowl week, Sanders expressed his desire to become a head coach.
“I’m going to be a head coach in college football next year,” Sanders said back in February. “I’m that definite. I’m that assured that I am. This is something that is my calling. I’m going to coach college football. Head coach, not coach. Head coach.”
It appears Sanders wasn’t bluffing.

Seminole Makes History as First Football Player to Wear FSU Jersey
Justin Motlow says that he’s just happy to be playing football, but the 5-foot-11, 182-pound freshman wide receiver’s humility makes his accomplishment that much sweeter.
This season, Motlow, who is from Tampa, will suit up as a Florida State University Seminole. An interesting acquisition for the team, because he will be the first tribal member to carry the team’s namesake on his uniform.
“It feels surreal,” Motlow told The Seminole Tribune.“I never imagined I’d be able to play here. I’m going to make the most of my opportunity and keep working.”
FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher said Motlow’s Native heritage is truly meaningful for the team and the school. “We just want to represent the Seminole family for all they have done for us,” Fisher said. “It’s a great honor to have a family member wear that helmet.”
Motlow’s grandmother is 100-percent Seminole and Motlow is one-fourth Seminole. “I’ve always loved FSU and they are a great program,” he told Yahoo News. “But to be able to have a chance to represent the Nation, that’s an extreme honor.”
At Tampa Catholic High School, Motlow was the Crusader’s 2013 offensive player of the year and had 1,000 yards receiving as a senior. Now at FSU, Motlow said that he has to train twice as hard to keep up with his teammates, but his coaches are taking notice.
“I like what I see,” said Lawrence Dawsey, FSU’s co-offensive coordinator coach. “Justin has good ball skills. He can run good routes and can catch the ball. He will be a good football player, but his head is spinning with the new offense and the tempo. But he’s eager to learn, and not backing down.”
Motlow came to FSU as a walk-on, so he won’t travel with the team, but he will suit up at home games. “I just want to play football and get a great education,” Motlow said to FlaVarsity.com. “I feel very blessed to have the chance to do bott – if it works out.”
