Edgewater High School climbs ranks after win in 4 overtimes

An epic showdown last week between Orange County rivals led to a shakeup near the top of the Sentinel Super 16 rankings entering Week 4 of the regular season.

Edgewater (2-1) moves up three spots from No. 7 to No. 4 after prevailing 52-49 in four overtimes against visiting Jones (2-1). The loss drops the Tigers from No. 2 to No. 5 entering the Tigers’ Friday trip to Bradenton to face undefeated national power IMG Academy.

Most area teams in Class 8A, 7A, 6A and 5A will open district play this week. The schedule is headlined by an undefeated large-class District 3 matchup between No. 2 Apopka (3-0) and No. 13 Ocoee (3-0).

The Blue Darters are up one spot to No. 2, followed by Lake Mary (3-0) at No. 3. Ocoee, which made easy work of Olympia (1-1) on Friday in a 34-13 win, is 3-0 for just the third time since the school opened in 2005.

Unbeaten Oviedo (3-0) is ranked No. 10 entering its first matchup vs. DeLand (0-1) since losing 28-23 in 2004. Winter Park (2-1) is up three spots from No. 14 to No. 11 after holding off host Boone (1-1) for a 26-21 win.

The Sentinel Super 16 rankings, made up of teams from Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake and southwest Volusia counties, include current records and last week’s ranking in parentheses if different.
